Why you need a social media content calendar

Why You Need Social Media Content Calendar

Social media can be absolutely exhausting. Let’s face it, coming up with content throughout your daily life to keep your brand “in the now” is not an easy task. We’ve all been there…

  •  “Well I need to post today.” Goes and digs through hundreds of photos.
  • “This looks cool…let’s try to do it.” Proceeds to try and recreate the content for 2 hours.
  • “I have the photo but what’s the caption?” Starts and restarts a caption 40 times.

It is time to stop renting out space in your mind to unnecessary stress. It’s time to start your own social media content calendar. Below are a few reasons why you should say yes to taking this important organizational step.

Fireproof Planning

“Plans are worthless, but planning is everything.”

– Dwight D. Eisenhower

Having an organized plan for the next 2 weeks or 2 months on your social channels allows you to better visualize your social content strategy. Every social platform has unique features and audiences, so content diversity is key. What drives engagement on Instagram doesn’t necessarily perform well on Twitter. Facebook offers ways to engage with people that no other platform does. Knowing what type of content performs well on what platform is half the battle.  This variety of content can be overwhelming, daily but the better you know your plan the easier it is to pivot when fires arise.

Tip: Posts that Drive Engagement, Per Platform

  • Facebook: Events
  • Instagram: Video
  • Twitter: Informational

The Algorithm

Everyone likes to win and the criteria in the social media game is engagement. For more people to see your posts you must beat the algorithm. Each platform has its own algorithm that operates slightly differently, but one thing is consistent for all: posting consistently. Posting frequently and consistently is made easy with a content calendar. Engagement numbers don’t lie, so let’s get yours up!

Tip: How Many Times Per Week To Post, Per Platform

  • Facebook & Instagram: The number of posts don’t matter – consistency does. Make sure you post on the same days, at the same time.
  • Instagram: Stories, stories, stories! These help jumpstart the algorithm.
  • Twitter: Multiple times per day!

Your Sanity

Allow yourself to be a producer in life without stress bogging you down. Social media should be a fun creative outlet, even if it is in your job title. While competition with the clock is good for consistency—who doesn’t love a little deadline pressure?—, it is not a friend of creativity. A content calendar takes competition with the clock out of the equation.

Tip: How To Make This A Priority?

  • I’m a huge fan of physically blocking time on my calendar. I block an hour each morning to work on content so that I can stay ahead of the game.
